merchant city festival, anywhere but nowhere

At the weekend, I was working at the Merchant City Festival as an artist liaison for a lovely dance group from Portugal who performed a short piece down on Tontine Lane, and was also looking after an exhibition from Jane Morley in an old shop on Trongate.  There were absolutely loads of things going on all weekend, with music stages and markets and people walking around with funnels on their heads and exhibitions dotted around merchant city.  I had time to have a bit of a wander on the Sunday and popped into Burniston Photography to see the Anywhere but Nowhere exhibition.  I have been familiar with Gordon Burniston’s photography for a little while now, and I am really fond of his work.  I think I first encountered his more fashiony photographs, such as his striking shots of some Torres dresses and portrait shots:
(I have that Torres dress on the left – I’ll post about it soon once I have found the right occasion for it!)

Anywhere but Nowhere featured a selection of landscape photographs just as arresting as his portraiture.  I think my favourite aspect of Burniston’s work his combination of subtle and striking – you feel the simplicity and normality of the image or moment alongside the special and remarkable qualities at the same time.

The Anywhere but Nowhere exhibition is now finished, but more photographs can be found on the Burniston website and on his blog.
